Songs to Woody
Max and Minni were collecting road killed deer for the hungry. Too bad that's against the law. Even worse about the cop who caught them.
My story "Oklahoma Hills," a prequel to the forthcoming novel The Jack-in-the-Box Man, appears in the October 2026 anthology Songs to Woody , featuring 14 stories inspired by the music and life of Woody Guthrie, and takes its inspiration from two Guthrie tracks: "Oklahoma Hills" and "Pretty Boy Floyd."
Set in a near-future world were law and order have followed the government into oblivion, it's one example of how everyday people can keep the corrosion of society around them from infecting their souls. I think Woody would have approved.
